3D Photogrammetry of a brain coral

Image
These 2 videos show a 3D render of a small brain coral from Bermuda. The program Autodesk 123 Catch generated the 3D wireframe model from a series of 40 photographs, all in less than 15 minutes. We plan to use this technology to measure coral growth in 3D, as well as develop 3D models of coral reef benthic communities from underwater photo or video sets. Stay tuned for more 3D fun in the weeks ahead!

Coral spawn!

Image
Here are some close-up shots of coral spawn we passed by out near Chub Beacon yesterday (Aug 12). Interesting how it forms striated streaks of dense and sparse planula. The large slick was many 100s of meters across. The entire lagoon was becalmed, presumably by mucus, and water clarity was much reduced. Photos (c) BREAM 2012 (Jessie Murdoch & Thad Murdoch)

A new B.R.E.A.M. logo

We are moving on from baseline assessment of Bermuda's coral reefs and other marine habitats, and forward to focus on both long-term monitoring of critical marine habitats and national marine policy analysis. To celebrate the exciting new agenda, we have changed our logo, and modified our name. Our mission: To support the conservation of Bermuda's healthy marine ecosystem!

Happy Bermuda Day - May 24th!

Gray Snappers chase fry at the mouth of the natural tunnel at Eastern Blue Cut, a marine protected area. Bermuda Day; the first day Bermudians "take the plunge" literally and go for the first swim of summer! Have a great weekend out on the water, at the beach, or in Town at the Parade!
